Mom, 2 children, semi driver hurt in The Acreage crash

A mother, two young children and a semi driver were injured Thursday in a crash at Northlake and Hall boulevards in The Acreage.

The wreck occurred just before 10 a.m.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said a tractor-trailer was traveling west on Northlake Boulevard when a Cadillac SUV, which was traveling north on Hall Boulevard, ran the stop sign at the intersection.

Firefighters had to extricate the occupants from the vehicles using heavy extrication tools, said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

The mother and two children in the SUV were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center bu Trauma Hawk in critical condition, said the sheriff's office. A fifteen-month-old, who was in a car seat, is in the worst condition, according to a sergeant on the scene.

The driver of the semi was also taken to St. Mary’s and is listed in serious condition.

Neighbors say accidents at the intersection happen way too often.

"It is very sad, very sad, hopefully the children will make it," said Cheryl Gathagan.

Jamie Gibson said, "Every one of them (crashes) is terrible. I don't understand. There is no excuse for it. There are  stop signs."

One neighbor says she has been to more than a dozen accidents near the same spot. She says she and her husband are almost like 'first responders' because they hear the crashes and are the first on the scene.

The collision caused a 25-to-30-gallon fuel spill, which has been contained.
