Fatal crash prompts petition in The Acreage

THE ACREAGE, Fla. - Residents in The Acreage are rallying Wednesday to change a dangerous intersection.

A group will present a petition to the Indian Trail Improvement District calling for speed bumps at the intersection of Northlake and Hall boulevards.

The petition was started after a Feb. 27 crash caused a 4-year-old boy to lose his life. As of Wednesday morning, it has 989 signatures.

Police say the sport-utility vehicle that Sebastian H. Chavez was riding in failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into a dump truck.

Chavez's mother, Kerri, was driving the SUV and went to the hospital with critical injuries. Chavez's 1-year-old sister also went to the hospital with injuries.

People who live near the intersection say the road has been the site of dozens of other crashes.

The petition will be presented to the Indian Trail Improvement District at its meeting Wednesday night at 6:30.

The meeting will be held at 13476 61st St. North in West Palm Beach.

The people behind the petition say speed bumps would slow traffic at the intersection which has stop signs but does not have stop lights.
