Hazmat crews evacuated ten homes in Lantana after car crashes into home

Toxic cloud of smoke threatens neighborhood

LANTANA, Fla. - West Palm Beach hazardous materials (Hazmat) crews respond to a severe chemical reaction after a car crashed into a home in Lantana, according to Captain Albert Borroto with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

The accident occurred on west Broward Street in Lantana Monday afternoon.

WPTV Reporter Katie Johnson is on scene. She tells us that the car ran a stop sign and crashed into a home's car port.

A huge cloud of smoke emerged from the combination of chlorine tablets, pool chemicals and radiator fluid mixing together.

The driver was transported to JFK Medical Center, said Captain Borroto.

Ten homes were evacuated due to the danger of the toxic cloud. Captain Borroto says "all residents have been allowed to return at this time. No residents were transported for any injuries and nobody in the neighborhood complained of any inhalation injuries from the spill."
