Intruder shot dead by Lantana homeowner

LANTANA, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting Thursday night in Lantana after a homeowner found two intruders.

Officials said the incident happened around 8:25 p.m. in the 400 block of Hibiscus Tree Dr.

According to authorities, a homeowner had just arrived home and found two people inside his residence. An altercation between the suspects and homeowner resulted in shots fired.

Both intruders were struck by gunfire. One person died at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  PBSO said they expect the injured intruder to survive.

The homeowner did not suffer any injuries.  However, two of the homeowner's dogs were shot and killed during the altercation.  

At this time, no charges have been filed against the homeowner, but the incident is still under investigation.

Neighbor speaks about incident

"Good for him [the homeowner], but it's sad that he had to do it," said Wayne Patenaud who lives in the neighborhood. "Sadly in this neighborhood, it happens a lot. Seen it many times over the years."

Patenaud said he's lived in the neighborhood for 37 years and is now trying to raise his 2-year-old.

"Pretty much you just try to protect your house the best you can luckily he had a firearm, if he hadn't , what could have happened to him?" added Patenaud.
