Angela Knowles is caring for her grandson, 9-year-old David.
Their budget is tight and affording food is a challenge. But David is getting breakfast and lunch thanks to his school's meal program.
His grandmother Angela said, "It saves me money because I don't have to worry how I am going to get those bills paid."
According to the USDA, more than 15 million children nationally don't have access to enough food for a healthy life.
But what happens once the school year is over? His after-school Adopt-A-Family program is stepping in.
Daron Morris said, "So, it's really important that we provide meals so that they don't have a lapse with their meals for that time."
The organization works with families affected by homelessness or low incomes.
This summer David will be getting more than food.
Daron told us, "The children have access to educational programs as well as steam speakers, science, technology, engineering, arts and math speakers who talk to the children about those career fields. The food and mental health active activities, education so we are looking to support the child as a whole."
David's grandmother is thankful. "I don't have words to explain and express how thankful I am and how grateful I am. It's really a blessing."
