LAKE WORTH, Fla. - A Lake Worth woman is facing six counts of child abuse after Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies found children locked in a room without adult supervision.
Deputies said that some of the children, who range in age from 11 years old to 4 months, were able to let themselves out of the house before they arrived.
An employee from Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches had gone to the home for a random inspection.
The woman saw a few children through the window, but the adult, Sophia Doreste, was not there.
The Adopt-A-Family representative had a key to the house and went in.
Deputies say the woman found dirty diapers and other stains on the floor, a trash can full of rotting food, a sink full of dirty dishes attracting bugs.
Investigators could not find any food in the fridge or cabinets and no towels, toothpaste, soap or shampoo at the house.
The house's toilet also had not been flushed.
According to deputies, Doreste resisted arrest when they arrived. They apprehended her at her Lake Worth house and had to use a Taser on her before she was taken into custody.
PBSO booked Doreste into the Palm Beach County jail on child neglect and resisting an officer with violence charges.
