Six-year-old girl brings two guns, one loaded, to Barton Elementary in Lake Worth

LAKE WORTH — Two loaded handguns were found in the backpack of a student at Barton Elementary School in Lake Worth, the Palm Beach County School District has confirmed.

The Palm Beach Post reports a six-year-old student brought them to school.

The school district said the weapons were put in the backpack by a relative who was in the process of moving from one house to another.

It says the student never took the guns out of the backpack and school officials immediately notified police after the discovery.

One of the guns was loaded, a source told the Post.

Principal Aurora Francois told the Post that, "At no time were students or staff in danger."

Palm Beach County School Police, the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are now involved in investigating the incident.

The Palm Beach Post contributed to this report.
