Mystery man rescues Lake Worth swimmer from drowning in ocean; saves man's life and walks away

Rescued swimmer wants to thank his mystery hero

LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Caught in a rip current and about to drown, a Lake Worth man was rescued on Monday from the ocean all thanks to the heroics of a mysterious skimboarder who quickly disappeared after saving the man.

John Zenson, 30, said he was swimming at the beach while it was unguarded. He overestimated his swimming skills and underestimated the power of the ocean when the waves caught him off guard.

"I was like 'oh my God, I'm exhausted. I can't really swim right now.' And then I went under a couple of times. 'Oh yeah, I'm done for,' " said Zenson.

Just as Zenson was about to give up someone jumped in to rescue him.

The stranger swam out to Zenson, fought against the waves and offered his skimboard for support.

"You know he was kind of like my guardian angel at that point. It's pretty much how I look at it. You know he came in and pretty much disappeared. It's astounding really," said Zenson.

A friend snapped a photo of the man they call a "hero" as he walked away, but his identity remains a mystery.

"We were all helping him get to the shore and then he just took off. He was like, 'I'm just glad that he was ok,'" said Tiffany Ward, who witnessed the rescue.

Zenson said for the rest of his life, each time he goes to the ocean, he will think of his hero.

"I would really like to thank him. Thank you for saving my life. If you wouldn't have been there, I would have drowned," said Zenson.
