SUBURBAN LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- Investigators have identified the body of a man found dead on a dirt road Monday in suburban Lake Worth.
Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies say sometime between the hours of 2:30 and 6:30 a.m., Marlon Javier Padilla was lying in the westbound lane of Canal 10 Road when an unknown vehicle ran him over and left the area without reporting the crash.
Padilla was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Padilla was found by a person heading to work. Canal 10 Road is near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.
Residents who live in a mobile home park across Canal 10 Road said they frequently saw a man who looks like Padilla around their neighborhood.
Neighbors say the man who stumbled upon Padilla's body told them he thought he was sleeping.
"He passed by the guy and he thought he was drunk, just like passed out on the road and they rolled back and double checked and he wasn't moving or anything, so they touched him to see if he was at least breathing but they say he was cold as a stone," said nearby resident Juan Arango.
Padilla's cousins say he moved to Florida from Honduras several years ago to work and send money back to his family overseas. They say he has two daughters ages four and seven.
Padilla was working with a local moving company in West Palm Beach.
Anyone who may have witnessed the hit and run is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
