Maria Rivera charged with shoplifting with child in tow at Lake Worth Walmart

LAKE WORTH, Fla. - A woman who is eight months pregnant has been arrested on child abuse and retail theft charges, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they received a call Tuesday from a Walmart at 4545 Hypoluxo Rd. about a report of shoplifting.

Investigators said that the suspect, Maria Riviera, had a young child seated in a shopping cart, taking baby items from the shelves and concealing them in a large purse and baby bag.

Deputies said that an unnamed man was acting as a lookout while Rivera went through the store. The man has not yet been charged.

Rivera told PBSO that she took the diapers and other necessities, worth $101.90, because she needed them for her child and could not afford them.

The unidentified man with Rivera told deputies that he agreed to help her because he was unemployed and could not pay for the items.

Rivera was arrested by the PBSO and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.
