Deputy and suspect identified in Lake Worth deputy-involved shooting

Suspect pointed gun at deputy, investigators say

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office  has identified the deputy involved in a shooting that happened early Saturday morning when he responded to an attempted armed robbery.

The shooting happened in an alley near 6th Avenue South and D Street.

The sheriff's office says Byron E. Perez-Leon tried to rob a person near Dixie Highway and 6th Avenue South.

Deputy Russell Brinson chased him into the alley. According to the sheriff's office, the suspect turned toward the deputy during the chase and pointed a gun at him and that's when the deputy fired his weapon.

The sheriff's office says the suspect dropped his handgun. Investigators recovered it and say they found the serial numbers scratched off.

Perez-Leon faces the following charges: Aggravated Assault with a Firearm on a Law Enforcement Officer, Carrying a Concealed Firearm and Resisting Without Violence.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave as a standard procedure during the investigation.

Perez-Leon remains at Delray Medical Center in stable condition.
