Car stolen, driven into Lake Worth canal

LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies have one suspect in custody and are searching for others after a stolen car went into a canal.

At about 4 a.m. Tuesday, deputies spotted a stolen vehicle at 10th Avenue and Boutwell Road with as many as five occupants inside.

They attempted to make a traffic stop, but deputies say it went down a dirt, dead-end road, and drove off the edge into a canal east of Flannigans at 2401 10th Ave. North.

First-arriving crews found a vehicle that was submerged in the deep water canal. Bystanders stated they saw several occupants get out of the vehicle and run away, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Cpt. Albert Borroto.

The suspects, deputies said, went in different directions.

It is unclear if putting the car in the canal was intentional.  The vehicle had been stolen in West Palm Beach.

Deputies at the scene said wet clothing was discovered in an adjacent neighborhood and want residents to be on the lookout.

One juvenile suspect, who had a gun, was discovered nearby and arrested.  Deputies said the suspect was in possession of a gun at the time.

If you have information, you are asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
