Gunfire follows traffic stop in Palm Beach County

Sheriff's office says man points gun at deputy

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says a person pointed a gun at a deputy after a traffic stop Thursday morning.

It happened north of 45th street at Caribbean Boulevard and Haverhill Road.

Authorities say deputies pulled over a man in a silver Hyundai and a passenger in the  vehicle got out and pointed the weapon at a deputy.

A deputy fired at least once and the passenger ran. Investigators don't think the passenger was hit.

They say the weapon was recovered.

There's an active search for the suspect.

Some residents were not surprised.

"This is the norm. This is the norm. All of this, this is truly the norm. So, you know, like I said, I'm in the process of trying to relocate and I can't wait to get out from over here, Samuel Smith said.

The driver is in custody and being questioned.

This story will be updated when more information is available.
