Family members and friends gathered Sunday at the South Florida National Cemetery in Palm Beach County to place miniature U.S. flags on 18,000 veterans’ graves.

This was the second year the event was held at the cemetery.

"The least that we can do is come out and put a flag at each and one of their graves to thank them for their service, to thank them for what they've done for us," said organizer Benito Avendano

"It’s an unbelievably moving experience. My husband was buried here earlier this year, and it’s very touching to see so many people and to see what goes on up here," said widow Lynda Kyse.

The flags will stay in place until June 4, giving families a week to see them.

The cemetery held its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday emceed by WPTV's Mike Trim, a Navy veteran.
