The Smithsonian museum: All museums would close. Excepted employees include those who protect the collections, feed the animals, etc. Volunteers aren't allowed to help out. Of 4,202 employees, 688 would be excepted and expected to work.
About half of the 1,976 Department of Treasury workers in Washington D.C. are furloughed during the shutdown.
The Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board will not investigate industrial chemical spills/accidents that happen during the shutdown. Current investigations would be frozen.
The majority of workers at the FBI, the ATF, the Bureau of Prisons, the DEA and other agencies within the Department of Justice would report to work. However 17,742 of the 114,486 employees would be furloughed.
The Federal Trade Commission: All commission employees shall be furloughed except those performing work to address a threat to human life or property and those involved in the orderly shutdown of agency operations.
Only 8,752 of the 94,516 IRS employees would be excepted during the shutdown, the rest are furloughed.
WPTV Department of Education: 3,983 of 4,195 employees are furloughed during the shutdown.
The National Gallery of Art: During a lapse in federal funding, the gallery and its grounds, including the Sculpture Garden, will be closed to the public. All public programs and events will be canceled.
The U.S. court system could operate for 10 days on available funds.
Department of Health and Human Services: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would continue. Large portions of Affordable Care Act activities and assessment of a portion of insurance premiums that are used on medical services are unaffected.
Federal Election Commission: An independent regulatory agency, the FEC discloses campaign finance information, enforces the laws on campaign contributions and oversees the public funding of presidential elections, but not during the shutdown.
The FDIC Office of Inspector General is an independent unit that conducts audits, investigations and other reviews of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's programs and operations. The office will be closed during the shutdown.
The Federal Communications Commission: During a shutdown, all FCC activities other than those immediately necessary for the protection of life or property will be suspended.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office could operate for "a few weeks" with existing funds.
