South Carolina construction worker gets $525 fine and loses job for refilling his pop

SOUTH CAROLINA - A South Carolina man was hit with a federal fine and lost his job for refilling his pop without paying for it.

Christopher Lewis, a construction worker, was doing construction at the VA Medical Center in Charleston and ate lunch in the cafeteria during his lunch hour.

Before Lewis went back to work, he walked up to the machine and refilled his glass.

He said he didn't see the sign that said "no free refills."

"As i was filling my cup up, I turned to walk off and a fella grabbed me by the arm and asked me was I going to pay for that, and I told him I wasn't aware that I had to pay for that," Lewis recalled the incident.

Lewis said he tried to pay the 89 cents after the conversation, but wasn't allowed to.

He was taken to a room, and given a $525 fine for shoplifting and fired on the spot.

A spokesperson for the hospital said Lewis was aggressive during the confrontation and that the "no free refill" signs were posted all over the cafeteria.
