Ron Paul: Why is the GOP presidential candidate skipping Florida?

Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are all holding campaign events across Florida Thursday. Their schedules include Mount Dora, Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Pensacola. But where is Ron Paul?

According to, Paul is taking two days this week to go to Maine, speaking at Colby College on Friday and the University of Maine's Gorham campus on Saturday, among other potential appearances in the state.

Now, many supporters in the sunshine state are left wondering why the Texas libertarian isn't holing fundraisers and campaign rallies in their neck of the woods.

According to reports from, Paul is giving Florida a pass because ad time is expensive and the state's electorate skews older, which is not Paul's best demographic.

Csmonitor staff writer Peter Grier reports Paul is focusing on caucus states such as Maine and Nevada, where his supporters can more easily out-organize the competition.
