President Obama praises Iraqi president for naming a new prime minister-designate

(CNN) -- President Barack Obama praised the Iraqi president for naming a new prime minister-designate, calling it an important step to unite Iraq's communities.

President Obama on Monday spoke with Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi, urging him to create a new Cabinet as quickly as possible.

The outgoing prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, had earlier vowed to hang on to power.

The president said U.S. forces are working with international partners to rescue Yazidis from a mountain where they were stranded after advances by ISIS.

U.S. operations advance the limited military objectives outlined for the situation in Iraq, he said.
