(WFIE) A Mount Carmel, Illinois family is counting their blessings after their pet saved their lives.
"He started screaming," says Ina Farler. "He would jump down, run to the door and then jump back up on the bed and hit me really hard. I sat up to see what was wrong with him because he usually doesn't do that through the night. When I sat up, I realized the room was really smoky."
Farler says she and her grandkids escaped through a bedroom window.
The Farler family has had "Lucky" since February.
"They make great pets, they're easy to potty train," says Farler. "He was potty trained in a day's time. And they're loving. They can be very protective actually. He loves my grandkids to death."
Maybe it was that protective instinct that went into play.
The home and everything inside is gone but Ina is happy her family is safe.
