Lake George ancient artifacts dating to 8000 BC found in upstate New York

(WNYT) - Archeologists in upstate New York have found ancient artifacts that are around 10,000 years old.

The artifacts, which include thousands of arrowheads dating back to roughly 8000 B.C., where found in a  picnic area near Million Dollar Beach on Lake George.

Scientists believe the tools were used by Native American hunters and gatherers.

"They're probably living here for a season, they're roaming around the lake looking and migrating after large mega fawna, caribou," said Christina Reith, a state archeologist.

The excavation will continue into December. The artifacts are all the property of the state museum, whose director says at some point in the future visitors will get a rare glimpse into the past.

"This is a time period in New York for which we know very little about. And the fact that this is being done as part of a systematic investigation that we're taking our time and trying to learn everything we can about these very early occupants of Lake George," says Reith.
