DENVER - A Colorado pastor with an Internet radio program wants to boycott Girl Scout cookie sales because he says the organization promotes lesbianism and abortion.
Internet radio host Kevin Swanson, of Elizabeth, Colo., raised eyebrows Monday when he attacked the Girl Scout organization.
"I'd say you ought to say 'No!' to the Girl Scout cookies," Swanson told listeners. "I don't want to support lesbianism, I don't want to support Planned Parenthood and I don't want to support abortion, and if that be the case I'm not buying Girl Scout cookies."
Swanson also called the Girl Scouts of the USA "a wicked organization," that doesn't promote "Godly womanhood."
His Internet radio show -- Generations Radio -- is heard by at least 15,000 listeners.
"Have you ever been to a Girl Scout meeting before?" asked NewsChannel 5's sister station 7NEWS reporter Marc Stewart.
"No, I haven't," Swanson said.
"So how can you make those statements?" Stewart asked.
"Well, I just take the data I see on the Internet -- I see the associations on the Internet. I see the promotion of feminism and lesbianism," Stewart responded.
Swanson later added in his radio broadcast that the Girl Scouts organization is creating a generation of independent women who support a "communist in the White House" and promote the "gay and lesbian agenda."
Girl Scout cookie sales date back to 1917.
Girls Scouts Colorado Chief Marketing Officer Rachelle K. Trujillo responded to Swanson with the following prepared statement:
"Because Girl Scouting is a beloved American institution, our name has the power to draw attention to topics that might otherwise go unnoticed. These wild statements are not worthy of our attention. We are way too busy building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
"It is a fact that neither Girl Scouts of the USA nor Girl Scouts of Colorado has ever had a relationship with Planned Parenthood, including not providing support to, collaborating with or distributing information from Planned Parenthood. One of the great things about Girl Scouts is that our diverse membership is a cross section of American families, and we honor the beliefs and personal values of all families. That is why we do not take a position of sensitive issues that we feel are best decided by girls and their families, such as abortion and birth control. We are very proud to be an inclusive organization that values diversity."
