WASHINGTON - Today's fourth and eighth graders are doing better than their predecessors in math and reading. But it's too early to start celebrating.
The Nation's Report Card finds that just about 40 percent of fourth graders, and about a third of eighth graders, showed solid academic performance in math. That means they scored at or above the proficient level.
In reading, about a third of fourth and eighth graders hit that mark.
Also, white students continued to outperform their Hispanic and African-American counterparts.
The nation's school kids do better today on the test than they did in the early 1990s when it started.
Thursday's results are from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, given every two years.
