A 3-day-old boy was found hours after he was seized from his mother who was fatally shot outside a pediatrician's office near Houston, authorities said.
Kala Golden, 28, was leaving the pediatrician's office on Tuesday afternoon when she had a verbal altercation with a woman parked next to her in Spring, Texas, according to police.
The woman in a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans took the baby from her and fled the scene, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said. Golden was shot repeatedly and died at a hospital.
Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Lignon says Verna McClain was charged early Wednesday in the killing of Golden.
Aerials from CNN affiliate KPRC showed a SWAT team surrounding an apartment near the shooting scene. The baby was not at the location, but authorities found information instrumental in his recovery, Ligon said.
It was unclear where the baby, Keegan, was found six hours after he was taken, but he's in "safe condition" and will be reunited with his father, Ligon said.
The shooting shocked many in Spring, which is 20 miles north of Houston.
Jennifer Hartis, a friend of the victim, was one of the many left wondering why.
"She never did anything wrong. She's just a mom doing her best to take care of her kids and I miss her," Hartis told KPRC. "Keegan is only three days old. He's needs to know his mom and she can't do that now. "
Henry Schuchardt, Keegan's paternal father, told the affiliate he was searching for answers.
"I wished I knew, I wished I knew," the crestfallen grandfather said. "I don't know how they could do this?"
