KNOXVILLE — The 6-month-old girl shot while her parents struggled over a gun Wednesday died from a bullet to the head, court records show.
The girl's parents — Angela Major, 26, and Ken Mason, 40 — remain in jail today, charged with reckless homicide.
A friend was on the phone with Major around 1:40 p.m. and heard her and Mason arguing and struggling over a gun, according to an arrest warrant. The girl, Kelsey, lay at the couple's feet.
During the struggle, the gun went off and hit Mason in the hand and Kelsey in the head, according to the warrant.
Authorities converged on the house hidden by thick woods at 2421 Alcoa Highway in response to the shooting.
Kelsey was taken by ambulance to the nearby University of Tennessee Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies recovered a pistol at the scene, Knox County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Martha Dooley said. She wouldn't say what kind.
Mason initially was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to obey court orders, Dooley said.
Major, the mother, has a criminal history in Knox County that includes charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated arson, theft and vandalism, court records show.
Detectives haven't said what led to the argument at the time of the shooting, or how many rounds were fired.
Bond was set at $1 million each for the couple.
