PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL-- Every year thousands of adults and children end up in the emergency room because of fireworks.
So if you're having a big celebration at home, there are some safety tips to keep in mind.
Before you do anything, read the labels. Do not set fireworks on the grass.
"You want to be on concrete, flat surfaces," said Zondra Hunter with the Safety Council of Palm Beach County.
When it's time to light, keep everyone at a safe distance.
"You want to be at least 25 to 30 feet back away from the firework and the person igniting the firework needs to light the fuse and immediately step back."
Light only one item at a time and never attempt to re-light a dud.
Sparklers are very popular with the kids, but are actually the leading cause of injuries because they're not used correctly.
"Have them hold one sparkler at a time, hold it out to the side away from the body and always have an adult light it. Don't let them light them themselves. And don't let them use one sparkler to light another sparkler."
Another kid favorite is "pops". They make loud noises, but aren't flammable.
The Safety Council of Palm Beach County recommends using a bucket of water to throw used fireworks in. Also, keep a fire extinguisher or a water hose nearby.
"Just use good judgment and be safe that way your family and friends are protected," said Hunter.
Follow these guidelines and you're sure to have a safe and happy 4th of July.
