PORT ST. LUCIE, FL -- For the first time since he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Greg Edgerly slept peacefully through the night.
"It’s almost unbelievable but I just thank God for everything," said his wife Marilyn.
The couple is grateful for what has become an outpouring of support from the community.
Monday night, NewsChannel 5 reported the story of Greg's cancer and the family's desperate financial situation. They've had their power and water turned off for failing to pay their bills. They don't have the money to cover their rent.
Since the story aired, Marilyn says she's received more than 100 calls of support.
"Absolutely terrific, as of last night with the report on the news we’ve had an outpouring, an outpouring of people calling, sending monies, paying our utility bills," said Marilyn.
One person offered to pay the couple's rent for the next 6 months. Someone else came forward and offered to buy their truck, which they've tried, unsuccessfully, to sell for weeks.
They've heard from other families struggling with cancer. Even people who have lost their jobs are calling to offer financial support.
"It makes you well up with tears," said Marilyn. "These people don’t have any more than we do and yet they want to send us something."
She says the response has reinforced her faith, and given her husband some peace.
"I know he can’t rest easily unless he knows his family is going to be taken care of…and at this point they’re going to be," she said.
