Adopt a dog on a bus?

Last Update: 3/25/2009 11:28 pm
WEST PALM BEACH, FL --  During these tough economic times, more animal owners are surrendering their pets to shelters like Palm Beach County’s Animal Care and Control.

Likewise, some are looking to complete their family with a dog or cat’s unconditional love.

But before you spend money at a pet shop, one agency is hitting the road to encourage you to rescue one instead.

Dogs and cats on a bus, that’s pretty much the gist of what the North Shore Animal League is up to this time of year.

“We’re traveling across the country to 25 different cities,” said Mike Novellino from the League.

Two mobile units travel thousands of miles to spread one message.

“There are so many homeless animals in these types of shelters that this is where would be the best place to save a life,” he said.

Today they parked at Palm Beach County’s Animal Care and Control Center.  Adorable cats and dogs of all kinds are on display for adoption.

These days the shelter is seeing more owners surrendering their pets because of the tough economy.  Our local shelter could have up to 500 animals needing families at any given time so there’s always a need.

Events like this one not only help the adorable pets and the shelter but some people say rescued cats and dogs actually make better pets.

“They just seem to know that they’ve been rescued.  They’re very grateful.  They’re very thankful that they got a home and there’s a 6th sense that they know they probably escaped death,” said Kelly Farrell who attended the event looking to adopt a dog.

Adopting could be a good financial deal for owner, too.

All animals from the shelter are up to date on their shots, they’ve been sterilized and micro-chipped.  Plus the first vet check-up is free.  Dogs and puppies, only $40, cats and kittens are $20.

If you’ve got a soft spot for puppies, now may be the time to snag one.  Animal Care and Control says they see most of their litters in the spring and summer.

The bus pulls out tomorrow to head to Sarasota.

However, the shelters in our area are here to stay and are looking to adopt-out animals year round.
