CORPUS CHRISTI, TX. Scott Damerow never imagined that heading a soccer ball for most of his life would help him obtain a Guinness World Record.
Especially since that record involved more than 140 eggs, a sore forehead and being filmed for a national TV audience.
Damerow, a freshman at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, gained his Guinness World Record for "Most Eggs Crushed With The Head," on the show "Guinness World Records Gone Wild," on truTV, which aired March 14. The egg crusher cracked 142 eggs with his forehead in one minute in front of a live audience and Guinness World Record officials in July.
The previous record held was 130 eggs cracked.
The bigger question is how did this random feat of cracking eggs evolve? Damerow is still racking his brain about that one too.
Before his senior soccer season in 2011 in Corpus Christi, Damerow and his friends decided it was time they gained a title with the Guinness World Records. He sent in the official paper work and attempted several records, like the fastest blind folded 200-meter dash or the fastest 50 meter wheelbarrow race, but was unsuccessful.
He shrugged it off and forgot about the whole thing. It wasn't until February 2012, that he got an unexpected email from truTV's show "Guinness World Records Gone Wild," saying they saw his paper work with Guinness World Records in his attempts earlier that year. The show asked him if he would consider taking another crack at breaking a record, but this time on TV.
Damerow said the show gave him a list of records to attempt in an audition tape, which is where he found the egg cracking idea.
He went to Sam's Club and loaded up on eggs and performed a dry run of the bizarre record at Doc's Seafood & Steaks here, where his mother works.
Damerow didn't break the record, cracking only 130 eggs with 10 seconds left. Despite his failed try, truTV flew him to Los Angeles in early July 2012 to film him taking an official shot at the egg cracking record.
"The network paid for my trip out there, so it worked out as a perfect senior trip," Damerow said.
Adrenaline pumping, Damerow's forehead ripped through 142 eggs moving like fluid across two long tables in front of a large audience. The show announced him as the new official record holder and presented him with a trophy.
"My head felt pretty numb after that," Damerow said. "I didn't even realize I got cut by an egg shell because I had so much adrenaline."
His father, Paul Damerow, said it didn't surprise him that his son succeeded.
"He was No. 4 in his senior class and captain of the soccer team, so he always shoots for the moon," Paul Damerow said.
Now that he can publicly talk about his record, (he couldn't share his good news for several months until the show aired), Damerow said he won't be using his bragging rights to pick up girls.
"That's like fifth date material, something I'll definitely stay away from sharing that right away," he said.
