Michael Shafts: New York waiter receives $1,000 tip from man celebrating birthday

A New York waiter is celebrating after a man left him a $1,000 tip.

The waiter, Michael Shafts, was working his shift at The Ginger Man, a wine bar and restaurant, in Albany, New York, when he received the tip that was 10 times the amount of the bill, according to ABC News .

The tip was left by a birthday reveler with a message written on the receipt that said, "Pay it forward. My birthday present to me!"

Shafts said the couple left him a $1,000 tip on the restaurant's receipt.

The manager described Shafts as a "very hardworking young man." He works full-time at a bank, picks up part-time shifts at the restaurant and fixes broken phone screens on the side.

In a kind gesture, he even divided half of the generous tip and passed it out to other employees who were working on that night.

"I always tell him that he’s my favorite. He’s honestly a great guy and it couldn’t have happened to a better person," said Shafts' manager.
