Contact 5 Investigators discover millions spent on vacant South Florida government property

Is it a big waste or a big investment?

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- At a time when government agencies are slashing budgets and laying off workers across our area, the Contact 5 Investigators discovered these agencies are spending millions of dollars on vacant land and property you probably didn't even know was there.

Many of the buildings are empty, worn down and left behind. Some taxpayers were shocked at the price tag.

"I'm flabbergasted," said Gail Simmons. "I just don't understand why it would cost that much to maintain that property. It doesn't cost me that much money to maintain my house."

The Contact 5 Investigators found government agencies from the Treasure Coast to the Palm Beaches are spending millions of your tax dollars paying for property no one uses. The team spent the past three months working to get you answers.

From old portable classrooms, to empty prisons to empty office buildings, find out where your money is being spent Wednesday night on NewsChannel 5 at 11.
