New research suggests taking fever reducing medicines when you have the flu may do more harm than good.
A Canadian study found using Ibuprofen and acetaminophen to bring down a flu-related fever could be responsible for thousands more influenza cases and additional flu deaths.
That's because a fever helps lower the amount of virus in the body, which reduces the chance of spreading the disease.
When a fever is lower, there's also a false sense of feeling better, which may mean patients go back to work or school even though they're still contagious.
Experts recommend these medications should only be used to ease discomfort while recovering from the flu.
