Facebook fans and Twitter users remember Gary Carter

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Palm Beach Gardens resident and Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, whose single for the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series touched off one of the most improbable rallies in baseball, died Thursday. He was 57.

Carter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor last May. Social media networks like Facebook and Twitter are flooding with Carter tributes, and RIP Gary Carter became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter minutes after his death was announced.

"Saddest day for such an amazing family and everyone who has ever had the chance to meet Gary and know him as the father, husband and grandfather he was," wrote WPTV Facebook fan, Theresa Rae.

" RIP Gary Carter, how heartbreaking! I will always remember him as one of my favorite players from the 1986 Mets," said WPTV Facebook fan, Kathi Kealing.

" Gary was a great hall of fame catcher and active member of our community. My condolences to his family and friends," Anthony Novelli wrote on the WPTV Facebook page.
