David Odom, Lake Worth crash victim, mourned by family and friends

Suspect facing DUI manslaughter charge

LAKE WORTH, Fla.--  The lunch rush was about to begin at Philly Grill on Hypoluxo Road Tuesday.  But it was far from "business as usual."

The restaurant's manager and mentor, David Odom, was killed in a crash Monday just down the road at Military Trail and Melaleuca Lane.

"He taught them a lot, like a father figure almost , its tough its tough," said Philly Grill Owner Ron Fine.

Fine was a good friend of Odom's.

Investigators, who were back at the scene on Tuesday,  say William Melendez was driving drunk and speeding when he slammed into Odom's car, killing him and injuring others.

Investigators say Melendez ran from the crash; cops caught him behind the Imagination Station Daycare.

Tuesday morning a judge set bond for Melendez at more than $1 million.

His prior rap sheet is extensive. It includes convictions involving cocaine use and violence towards a law enforcement officer.

He was in jail just two months ago, arrested on an out-of county warrant.   And he was driving on a suspended license Monday.

Odom leaves behind a wife, three children and many friends.

"He was a chef, so he was always trying to teach me something, very big family-oriented person, extremely nice to everybody, a character, trying to make everybody laugh all the time," said Fine.
