PBG company gets visit from police

Last Update: 11/20/2009 8:45 am

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL -- Police spent hours talking with employees inside First Universal Lending LLC and walked out with boxes of paperwork Thursday evening.

NewsChannel 5 was unable to confirm what the investigation was about.

When NewsChannel 5's Marci Gonzalez asked one employee, "Can you tell me what you're being investigated for?"  He responded, "I dunno, I forget...no one can make a comment right now."

One man who works nearby and asked not to be identified says this may stem from a complaint he made to the State Attorney's office last week.

He, along with others who work in the building on PGA Blvd., say they thought the company's practices seemed fishy.

When the man looked on-line he found numerous complaints against First Universal including more than 270 with the Better Business Bureau.

The company has a B- rating with the BBB and most complaints, according to the BBB's website, have been resolved.

But the harsh words from upset customers remain on the site.

Many accuse First Universal of promising to settle debt and mortgages for an upfront fee, then not following through.

One complaint states, "DO NOT SIGN WITH THIS COMPANY!!! IT IS A SCAM TO TAKE YOUR MONEY AND YOU WILL STILL LOSE YOUR HOUSE!!"

The man who asked the State Attorney's office to investigate says those complaints, "Confirmed our suspicions...so we thought they ought to at least be investigated."

We were unable to reach the owner of the company, the Palm Beach Gardens police department or the State Attorney's Office in regards to this case.
