SunPass is replacing older transponders with newer, battery-free models.
The updated transponder will not require battery replacements and have no feedback feature like the old ones. The beep, light and display of the older models required transponders to be battery operated.
The old transponders will be replaced at no cost.
The new transponder will also provide all the current features such as Easy Pay and SunPass Plus Airport Parking, according to SunPass officials.
Users will also be able to participate in future enhancements, starting with the ability to use their transponder to pay tolls on North Carolina roads, officials reported. In the future, users will be able to travel to other compatible states and pay for out of state tolls using their SunPass account.
The old transponders will be de-activated within the next 18 months, according to SunPass officials. SunPass mailed out a postcards to old SunPass users with further information on replacing their old SunPass.
