IRS warns of sophisticated scam

The Internal Revenue service is now warning you about a sophisticated phone scam that specifically targets recent immigrants.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a preloaded debit card or wire transfer.

Victims who refuse are threatened with arrest or deportation. Officials say scammers are using fake names and fake IRS badge numbers.

The IRS says it will never ask for your credit card information over the phone, nor request a debit card of wire transfer. Instead, the IRS is likely to contact taxpayers on a tax issue via mail.
