Insurance Institute for Highway Safety releases new top safety picks for 2014

(NBC News) Some automakers are getting an early Christmas present.

Results released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show 39 new cars did so well in crash tests that the institute has chosen each to be a Top Safety Pick for 2014.

22 of them get the even higher ranking of top safety pick plus for installing front crash prevention systems.

"They can detect when you're getting too close, when a collision is imminent, they will try to alert you with a warning and if you don't act, they'll slam on the brakes," explains IIHS president Adrian Lund.
