Dollar stores: Best and worst buys

The dollar store seems like a great place to get some cheap deals, but not everything there is a bargain. We got a list from Cheapism.com on some of the best and worst things to buy at dollar stores.

Some items you want to take advantage of are party supplies. You can get helium filled balloons for $1 compared to spending $3 to $8 at other stores. You can also buy 25 unfilled balloons for only one dollar. Gift bags and gift wrapping are other good buys at dollar stores.

If you're shopping for the kids, school supplies are also a good buy at dollar stores. You can get pens, pencils, markers, and crayons two to eight packs for $1.

Dollar stores also have a good selection of plasticware and glassware for only one buck.

Things you should avoid? Vitamins and medicine. Dollar store multi-vitamins didn't always have the amount of nutrients claimed on the label and others didn't dissolve fast enough to be absorbed by the body according to Consumer Reports.

Also light bulbs bought at the dollar store lack the lifespan of store brand light bulbs. Plus, a 4-pack of store brand light bulbs only costs $1.25 which is not much more than you would pay at the dollar store.

And lastly, small electronics bought at dollar stores are usually made cheaply and chances are they will not last. It's best to fork out a little extra cash to get something that will be more reliable.
