(NBC NEWSCHANNEL) Some supermarket chains including Kroger and Food Lion have added the word "about" to their express checkout lanes.

Rather than stating 15 items or less, or twelve items or less, the signs now say "about 15 items" and "about 12 items."

So why the change?

Supermarkets aim to increase how much consumers buy. Placing a limit on the number of items in the express lane means a consumer wanting to run in and out of the store may not buy everything they need in order to be eligible to use the express lane.
