DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) - Ford and SunPower Corporation have teamed up to offer Ford Focus Electric car owners a chance of going greener.
Through a "Drive Green for Life" program Focus electric owners are being offered a rooftop solar system that will provide customers with more clean renewable energy to offset electricity use.
Under the ‘Drive Green for Life' program, Focus Electric owners can reduce their total cost of ownership by generating enough energy from their high efficiency SunPower rooftop solar system to offset the electricity required to charge the vehicle at night," said Mike Tinskey, Ford director of Global Vehicle Electrification and Infrastructure. "It's an eco-friendly solution that perfectly complements our plug-in products and other green initiatives."
The rooftop is a total of 2.5 kilowatts and is comprised of SunPower's E18 solar panels that can produce an average of 3,000 kilowatt hours annually. Approximately 50 percent more electricity is generated through the high efficient solar panels versus conventional panels. The general system was designed to accommodate someone driving 1,000 miles per month.
The complete system is currently available for a base price of $10,000 before tax. The purchase includes a residential monitoring system which enables to the systems performance to be tracked through the web or an IPhone.
Interested customers will be contacted by a participating SunPower dealer.
