Police broke into a flat in Aachen, only to find 300 guinea pigs inside after the property's owner had disappeared.

The authorities were alerted after neighbors began complaining about a smell coming from the home.

When police arrived they found the mass of rodents and droppings reaching nearly 4 inches high in some rooms.

The rescued animals were taken to a local animal hospital.
