NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Rap star "Fat Joe" is due to be sentenced in New Jersey for federal tax evasion.
The platinum-selling artist, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena (car-ta-GEE'-nah), pleaded guilty in December 2012 to failing to pay taxes on more than $1 million of income in 2007 and in 2008.
The Miami Beach resident entered his plea in federal court in Newark because some of the companies he earns money from are incorporated in Somerville.
He faces up to two years in prison at his sentencing Monday afternoon.
His sentencing will take into consideration the government's initial allegation that he failed to pay income taxes for years 2007 through 2010, a tax loss to the government that prosecutors estimate at $718,038.
Cartagena topped the Billboard charts with the hit "What's Luv."
