The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for southeastern Indian River County that includes Winter Beach, Vero Beach, Vero Beach South, Indian River Shores and Gifford.

At 6:58 p. m., meteorologists with the NWS detected a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado near Vero Beach South. The storm is moving east-northeast at 25 mph.

The tornado warning is in effect until 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Residents of the affected area are urged to take precautionary measures .
