This morning we woke to rather mild temperatures in the 60s, but 35 years ago today folks all the way to Miami were waking to snow - the only snowfall on record in West Palm Beach.
At its coldest that day, the mercury dipped to 29 degrees in West Palm Beach.
Snowflakes fell in the Treasure Coast and as far south as Homestead. It was a brief flurry that left just enough of the white stuff for school children to scoop up a snow-ball's worth off car hoods. The remnants melted by 9:30 a.m., according to news accounts of the day.
Since then, various spots in the state have seen some flurries.
On Dec. 23, 1989, snow fell in north Florida closing bridges over the St. Johns River in Jacksonville and icing Interstate 95 from there south to St. Augustine. Snow dusted that city again the day after Christmas in 2010.
Brevard and Volusia counties have seen flakes in 2003 and 2008.
Of course, those flakes were flukes.
