JUPITER, Fla. -- For the longest time Florida was known as the home of spring training.
However, since 2000, the state has lost five spring training teams to Arizona. That is why Florida lawmakers are considering spending over $3 million each year, starting in 2015, to help local governments attract Major League Baseball teams.
One way of trying to woo MLB clubs would be with a new ballpark. One plan includes building a two-team complex in Palm Beach County.
"The State of Florida recognizes how important Spring Training is to this destination," said George Linley, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Executive Director.
Linley says a potential site for a new stadium would be in Palm Beach Gardens, just four miles from Jupiter's Roger Dean Stadium - the spring training site of the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.
"It really does help our county become quite the ultimate sports destination," said Linley.
The folks at RDS are all for the idea of bringing in two more teams to the area.
"My initial thought is it's great for baseball in Florida," said Mike Bauer, Roger Dean Stadium's General Manager. "It's nice to see this legislation could pass very soon and we'd love to have new neighbors."
Bauer knows the wonders spring training can do for the community. The two months the Marlins and Cardinals call Roger Dean home result in about $100 million for the local economy.
"I think it's a win-win all around for everyone and we're excited and I'm looking forward to having a couple other teams down here," said Bauer.
Receiving approval for the stadium won't be easy. If one is built, though, the two teams said to have interest in filling it would be the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros.
