UNDERWATER RACING RETURNS TO GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE
SECOND ANNUAL GOLD COAST UNDERWATER
GRAND PRIX, JULY 29-31
You have heard of NASCAR well this is NASCOOTER!
GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – July xxx, 2011 – Known for sun, sand, warmth and wreck diving, Greater Fort Lauderdale is gearing up for the Wreck Racing League World Tour. South Florida Diving Headquarters has teamed up with Formula H20 to host the second Gold Coast Underwater Grand Prix, July 29-31.
Formula H2O is the fastest growing underwater sport which features scuba divers racing underwater using diver propulsion vehicles (DPV). For the Gold Coast Underwater Grand Prix, a race track is set up underwater around the wreck of the SS Copenhagen. Participants race around the course on DPVs. There will also be a separate race for Freedivers and a race for disabled veterans from the Diver's 4 Heroes Underwater Race Team.
Since the course is in shallower waters, spectators can either snorkel and watch from above or can use SCUBA and watch from the infield below. Spectators will be able to listen to the race in the water, being broadcast live through a Self Contained Underwater Broadcast System (SCULS).
“We are thrilled to host the Gold Coast Underwater Grand Prix for the second year in a row and be a part of the Wreck Racing League Tour,” said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We encourage our visitors to immerse themselves in the wrecks, natural coral reefs, and variety of marine life in the waters that surround Greater Fort Lauderdale.”
The Grand Prix festivities begin Friday, July 29, with a kickoff party from 6:30-10pm at the Wyndham Sea Gardens Resort. On Saturday, July 30, a DPV Certification Class will be held in the morning at the Ocean Point Resort pool. Racers will have an opportunity to run the course and practice. Sunday is race day, and the races will begin in the morning.
The host dive operator for the event is South Florida Diving Headquarters, owned and operated by Jeff Torode based in Pompano Beach. South Florida Diving Headquarters has been featured on The Discovery Channel and The History Channel. In 2001 they were recognized by the Ocean Watch Foundation and awarded the Ocean Environment Award and in 2008 received the Recognition & Appreciation Award by the US Coral Reef Task Force. www.southfloridadiving.com
