Coral Gables, FL - George Mason's athletic director says Jim Larranaga is leaving to become the men's basketball coach at the University of Miami. Tom O'Connor tells The Associated Press that Larranaga called Friday morning to say that he has accepted the job at the Atlantic Coast Conference school.

Larranaga led the Patriots to a surprising Final Four berth in the 2006 NCAA tournament. His team went 27-7 this season and reached the third round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Ohio State.
O'Connor says GMU wanted to keep Larranaga but couldn't compete with the money offered by an ACC school.

The Hurricanes were seeking a replacement for Frank Haith, who left to become coach at Missouri. Haith went 129-101 at Miami.
