WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - South Florida is home to many of the nation's elite high school football players. Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast boast multiple athletes who will be attending top football programs in the Fall. Unfortunately, every year several star players slip through the cracks and are overlooked by many universities. This year one of those players happens to be Jensen Beach star running back Tevin Wilson.
Wilson stood out this year playing 4A competition, rushing for 1,962 yards and 24 touchdowns all while averaging over 8 yards per carry. Wilson ran for over 300 yards in two games, including a school record-breaking 353 yard performance against Titusville.
Wilson also stands out in pure physical appearance. At 5'11'' 190lbs, Tevin Wilson is as solid as a rock and has the quickness and speed to match any player in the area.
I caught up with Wilson today before practice for the Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey and Fronrath Trial Attorney's All-Star Game (formerly the Outback Bowl). Wilson is a running back for the American team, which features stars from Northern and Western Palm Beach County as well as the Treasure Coast.
I started off the interview with what I thought was a simple question, asking him to list the top schools that have given him official offers expecting to write down some of the nations top programs. Tevin Wilson answered, "Zero." Not one official offer from any football program. Throughout the season Wilson has received interest from Nebraska, Georgia Tech, N.C. State and Miami but recently has been hearing from Illinois St., College of Charleston and FAU, but no official scholarship offers.
Growing up in Stuart, Wilson was a Miami Hurricane fan. Wilson talked with Randy Shannon several times as the 'Canes seemed very interested, but since Shannon's firing, he has not heard from new head coach Al Golden's staff.
"We have sent my highlight film but have not heard back from coach Al Golden," Wilson said.
Tevin Wilson remains determined and knows many eyes will be on this upcoming All-Star game.
"I'm an overall good kid that hasn't been in trouble. I'm very coachable and always respectful." Wilson said. "I'll be the first person in my family to have a chance to graduate college. I will continue to work harder than anyone to achieve success. Hopefully someone gives me a chance."
American team head coach, Kevin Wald of John Carroll High School, knows of Wilson's talent, "We played him in the spring and he is a special talent. Tevin Wilson is one of the best running backs I've seen."
If you have had the pleasure of watching Jensen Beach RB Tevin Wilson in a game or practice, it's easy to see how talented of a player he is and can be on the next level. If you haven't there is one last opportunity this Saturday, January 17th, 7:30 pm at Boca Raton High School to see Tevin Wilson and many other South Florida stars play high school football one last time.
Like so many other players that may have been overlooked at one time or another, hard work and dedication are the driving force to become successful and Wilson thrives off both.
Tevin Wilson may not end up at an "elite" football program, but he certainly has the tools to be very successful at the next level and a great opportunity to make many football programs look very stupid.
