Florida Gulf Coast University has hired Kansas assistant Joe Dooley as its new men’s basketball coach, athletic director Ken Kavanagh announced Wednesday afternoon via the Eagles’ website.
A native of West Orange, N.J., Dooley spent the last 10 seasons at Kansas under Bill Self, helping the Jayhawks to two Final Fours and the 2008 national championship.
An introductory press conference is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday on the second floor of Alico Arena.
Dooley has offered FGCU assistants Marty Richter and Michael Fly spots on his staff along with Joey Cantens, the Eagles’ director of operations. Richter, who interviewed for the head coaching job, has served as the Eagles’ interim coach since former coach Andy Enfield took the USC job on April 2.
Enfield who was 41-28 in two FGCU seasons and took the Eagles to a stunning Sweet 16 run this year.
Dooley seems a good fit for FGCU’s up-tempo Dunk City style. In his Kansas tenure, the Wildcats averaged 80 or more points three times and 75 or more nine. Kansas was in the top-three of Big 12 scoring seven of the last 10 years. Dooley helped produce 14 NBA draft picks, including nine first-round selections, at Kansas.
A 25-year collegiate coach, Dooley also helped the Jayhawks to 300 wins (against 58 losses), nine straight Big 12 titles, six Big 12 tournament titles, six Sweet 16 and five Elite Eight berths. Kansas has been the winningest program in the country the last seven seasons with six 30-win campaigns.
Prior to joining Kansas in 2003, Dooley as an assistant at Wyoming and before that at New Mexico.
In his first head coaching stint, Dooley was 57-52 in four seasons at East Carolina after for USC Upstate coach Eddie Payne from 1991-95. Like FGCU, USC Upstate now is an Atlantic Sun program.
A four-year letterwinner at George Washington University, Dooley began his career at South Caolina in 1988.
Dooley and his wife, Tanya, have a son, Max.
