DAVIE — The Dolphins are coming to premium cable television.
First-year coach Joe Philbin announced after Tuesday morning's off-season workout that HBO and NFL Films has chosen the Dolphins to be featured on the training camp reality TV show Hard Knocks in August.
The TV show, which entails five one-hour episodes, will give viewers an all-access, behind-the-scenes look at the Dolphins as Philbin and his coaching staff pare the roster down from 90 players to 53. The first episode is set for Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Philbin said the decision to appear on Hard Knocks was "a football decision" and was not made by owner Stephen Ross or members of the team's business operation as a way to increase interest and help sell season tickets. The Dolphins did not sell out Sun Life Stadium for five of eight home games last season.
"Our owner, Steve, supported our decision, but in no way, shape or form forced us to make this decision," Philbin said. "It's going to showcase our players as they go through training camp. It's a great opportunity for us to connect with our fans. And it's a chance for us to show the new direction, identity of this football team."
This will be the seventh season of Hard Knocks, which will resume production after taking the 2011 season off because of the NFL Lockout. The last two teams to appear on the show both reached the playoffs - the Bengals in 2009, and the Jets in 2010, who reached the AFC Championship Game.
Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland was a part of the 2002 Cowboys team that appeared on Hard Knocks and went 5-11 that season. The Cowboys are the only team to have been featured twice, also appearing in 2008.
One person will win a three-year lease on a 2013 Honda Civic Lx Sedan automatic.
